We have an enrollment currently of 321 students in grades 6-8. There are 94 sixth graders, 114 seventh graders and 113 eighth graders. Our staff is comprised of 52 people-32 teachers, 3 teacher aides, 3 office aides, a part-time nurse, 5 cafeteria workers, 5 custodians, a counselor, an asst. principal, and a principal. The Rio Brazos Education CoOp also provides Special Education Counseling and Speech programs through personnel who serve our campus and other campuses in the CoOp.
The campus was rated "recognized" in the most recent accountability ratings. Our teaching staff has an average of 11.8 years experience with 7.8 years being served in the West ISD. In addition to the core classes of Math, Science, English, Reading and Social Studies, West Middle School also offers courses in Band and Art, and Health/Keyboarding. Eighth grade students also take a semester of Computer Literacy and a semester of Health. Eighth grade electives include a choice of Yearbook, Newspaper, Jazz Band, and Theatre Arts. Honors students in eighth grade may take high school credit courses including Algebra I, Health/Speech (a semester each), and Business Computer Information Sytems.
Athletics is offered to both boys and girls in the 7th and 8th grades and West Middle School participates in UIL District 12-AAA with Glen Rose, Hillsboro, Kennedale, Venus, and Whitney. The program offers girls' volleyball, basketball and track as well as boys' football, basketball and track. The school also participates in UIL District 12-AAA in academic and band competitions.
The campus also offers students the opportunity to utilize technology through four computer labs for Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. Students needing remediation for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills tests are offered additional instruction in the Finish Line classroom to work to improve those skills prior to taking the TAKS tests in the spring.
